Dormitory Cottage at Letchworth Village — Thiells, New York

Children were housed in these dormitory cottages – crowed even with fully functioning children, but for those with developmental and physical disabilities, overcrowded is an understatement.  From a presentation in June 1994 to the AAMR by Gunnar Dybwad, Ph.D. , a student at Letchworth Village in 1938 stated, “Dormitories that were to house only 70 people were crowded with 100 beds with 125 children sleeping in them; in other dorms, there were no beds at all.”
