Reflecting on the Waters (2015)

Marine Elevator at Silo City — Buffalo, New York

It was both the waters of the Great Lakes and the water of the Erie Canal that brought Buffalo to economic prominence in the 19th and 20th centuries – where grain from the Midwest arrived by boat and was shipped to the cities of the East. But it was the waters of the Saint Lawrence Seaway that proved to be the undoing of the city, making these massive grain elevators unnecessary and obsolete when a more direct method of grain transportation was developed.
