The End Product (2015)

St. Nicholas Coal Breaker — Mahanoy, Pennsylvania

Invented in the 1840s, coal breakers transformed large, difficult-to-ignite chunks of raw anthracite (hard coal) into a variety of smaller, more uniform sizes which allowed for more efficient burning. In addition to sizing the coal, breakers also removed impurities (typically slate) and deposit them into a culm (small, uneconomical pieces of ore) dump.
