Separation (2015)

St. Nicholas Coal Breaker — Mahanoy, Pennsylvania

Menzie cones were coal separators (invented in the 1930s by engineer William C. Menzies, Sr.) where water was injected at high pressure into large, steel cones. Coal is then skimmed from the surface (coal floats) with culm and wastewater flowing out from the bottom of the cones.
