Charles Winship and Elizabeth Bolt started the Harvard Knitting Mill with $2,500 of combined funds in 1888, and soon  employed 20% of the mill workers in New England. Through Winship’s progressive thinking, Harvard Knitting Mill payed generous wages, provided free medical services for their employees and was the first US company to institute an employee profit sharing plan.
