Shenango China Company — New Castle, Pennsylvania
At the beginning of World War II, Shenango Pottery was the largest manufacturer of vitrified china in the world, with a workforce of about 2,300 employees. The war years brought a lot of change to Shenango, as the plant was modernized and greatly improved with many of the male employees being replaced with female workers. The company geared its production towards supporting the military effort, manufacturing china for use by the Armed Force as well as producing ceramic parts for use in assembling land mines for the U.S. Army.
