Death Welcomes You (2013)

Bronze of Death at the Entrance to Riverside Cemetery — Waterbury, Connecticut

“Thou hast made me, and shall Thy work decay ?
Repair me now, for now mine end doth haste ;
I run to death, and Death meets me as fast,
And all my pleasures are like yesterday.”
— Holy Sonnet 1 by John Donne

Cross My Heart (2013)

Taphophile Week – Last Day

Holy Sepulchre Cemetery – Rochester, New York
Established 1871
Size: 332 acres with 300,000 interments

“Cross my heart and hope to die
Stick a needle in my eye
Wait a moment; I spoke a lie
I never really wanted to die.
But if I may and if I might
My heart is open for tonight
Though my lips are sealed and a promise is true
I won’t break my word, my word to you.” – Children’s Verse

Little Pet (2013)

Taphophile Week – Day 5

Mount Hope Cemetery – Rochester, New York
Established 1838
Size: 196 acres with 350,000 interments

This marker was in a section with dates from the early 1800s. I find it interesting that a companion animal of this era was thought dear enough by the family to rate a formal burial.

Sister Go Elsewhere (2013)

Taphophile Week – Day 4

Holy Sephlecure Cemetery – Rochester, New York
Established 1871
Size: 332 acres with 300,000 interments

In this Catholic cemetery, the priests are buried beside the chapel with large headstones.  The sister’s section is far away in an open field – their small headstones flush with the ground.

Alone, amidst other markers with more information about who and when, lies “Little Giddie” – simultaneously remembered and forgotten.
